Description

Here's a very rare, original, & complete 1897 black Americana card game entitled "THE GAME OF IN-DIXELAND".  Included is the original blue cardboard 2-piece box.  This game is number 1118.  It was manufactured in 1897 by The Fireside Game Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, which is printed in gold on the front of the box.  The game instructions are on the inside of the box top.

Included are all 53 game cards.  There's one "crown card" and 52 other cards.  Printed in opposite corners of each card is a number, starting from A1 and going to M4.  Each card has a WONDERFUL & different real photo picture of black adults and children working, playing, eating watermelons, etc.  Printed below each picture are derogatory & stereotypical words.

On the back of every card is the same green & white-colored design with watermelons and an alligator in the center.  The "crown card" shows a smiling black boy, and includes the manufacturer's name and 1897 copyright date.

Also included is an extra card with a list of other available Fireside Company games.

These cards have been individually put into top-loading clear plastic pages which are in a white vinyl 3-ring binder.

It's hard to find a complete set of these game cards and the original box.

THE CONDITION IS AS FOLLOWS---PLEASE READ:   Many of the cards have some cosmetic problems, although these problems don't really affect the nice picture graphics and words below them.

About 12 of the cards have small, light corner paper peels.  There are corner area chips on 3 cards, and side edge area chips on 3 cards.  2 cards have a piece of clear (age yellowed) tape around the front & back.  1 card has a piece of light white tape around the front & back.  6 or 7 cards have very small edge tears.

The box top has 1 and 1/2 missing sides and a piece of white tape across part of the sides.  The box bottom has 1 missing side and 2 small side flap seam tears.

Again, the cosmetic card problems are noticeable but located mostly in places where the nice pictures aren't affected.  Half of the cards are without problems, and overall this card game is in good, very presentable condition.  And the game is complete.

Here's your chance to own this early, quite desirable black ethnic card game.

BIDDERS--PLEASE NOTE:  If you see a white glare or a fuzzy, unclear picture in the scans shown below, they were caused by my digital camera.  The actual game is clean & clear.
